From Itai Musengeyi in Beijing, China
Zimbabwe Herald

Zimbabwe and China yesterday signed a number of co-operation
agreements that will see the two countries cement their
economic relations with Beijing undertaking to help Harare
which is presently under a Western onslaught, safeguard its
sovereignty.

The agreements include a 50 million yuan (about US$6 million)
grant to import grain and finance projects mutually agreed on
by the two countries. Harare and Beijing also agreed to
establish a loan servicing mechanism that will ensure
Zimbabwe repays its loans to China. Finance Minister Dr
Herbert Murerwa signed the agreement on behalf of Zimbabwe
while Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce signed on behalf of
his country.

China will also provide 100 computers in support of President
Mugabe’s wish to make information technologies accessible to
all people. On human resources development, Beijing increased
the number of scholarships it offers to Zimbabwe annually by
eight.

Another major deal agreed on was the expansion of Hwange
Power Station by two units of 300 megawatts each,
transmission substation lines and investment in coal mining.
China Aero Technology Import and Export Corporation and Zesa
Holdings signed a memorandum of understanding under which
Catic will provide loans and expertise to finance and
undertake the projects. The Zimbabwe Defence Forces and China
signed an agreement for the establishment of a bonded
warehouse for the Air Force of Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe is expected to take delivery of the third MA60
passenger aircraft from China soon after Transport and
Communica-tions Minister Cde Chris Mushohwe and Catic
officials signed a contract to deliver the plane, which Catic
gave to Zimbabwe as a gift after it bought two similar planes
for the national airline, Air Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe and China will also sign an agreement to co-operate
in the area of justice.

President Mugabe, who is leading a Zimbabwean delegation on a
State visit here, met his Chinese counterpart Mr Hu Jintao at
the Great People’s Hall where they discussed bilateral
relations.

Mr Hu pledged that China would help Zimbabwe safeguard its
sovereignty and territorial integrity in the wake of a
British-led Western onslaught.

"China supports the righteous position of Zimbabwe in
protecting her sovereignty and territorial integrity. Over
the years our relationship has blossomed making us true
friends," officials quoted him as telling President Mugabe
after he had requested for Beijing’s help.

Mr Hu also spoke about trade between the two countries saying
there was need to increase economic co-operation.

He said China undertook to encourage Sino investments in
Zimbabwe while Beijing hoped Harare would provide a conducive
environment.

On regional and international issues, the two leaders agreed
to step up co-ordination in promoting the interests of
developing countries. China pointed out that the United
Nations should be reformed to make it more efficient and
prioritise development which is critical to Third World
countries.

President Mugabe reiterated Africa’s position on the reform
of the UN. Mr Hu paid tribute to Zimbabwe for supporting
the "One China" policy and the Sino-Africa relations.

The two leaders called for high-level co-operation at
government, political and parliamentary levels and an
increase in trade and investment in the mining, energy and
agricultural sectors.

Trade between China and Zimbabwe has been on the increase in
recent years and now stands at US$254 million per year.

Later in the evening Mr Hu hosted a dinner for President
Mugabe and his delegation.
