Tanzania ’to be industrialised by year 2010’

By Pascal Shao

President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete yesterday said the economy of Tanzania had the capacity to grow to the levels of the emerging Asian economies.

However, to scale these heights, the President challenged the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Markets to strive to make Tanzania an industrialised nation by implementing the already existing policies.

He was emphatic that it was not prudent to shelf the already formulated policies at the expense of new ones.

The President made the remarks when addressing the ministry’s staff at the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair grounds.

As for the business community, the President challenged them to find homegrown solutions to the problems in the sector.

The business sector, the President noted, should put forward strategies to attract investors in the existing industries as well as putting up more.

’’Those are the issues you ought to focus on, in order for the industrial sector to grow by 2010, in accordance with CCM’s manifesto,’’ he said.

Like the now flourishing Asian economies, the President asked entrepreneurs to invest in small scale industries.

Kikwete cited Vietnam, as a sterling example of an economy that has been revamped, basing on small industries.

But the President underscored the importance of improving the requisite infrastructure, such as water, electricity and communication lines, such as roads, to create an enabling environment for the growth of the industrial sector.

Without infrastructure, the President regretted that it would be difficult for investors to venture into the economy.

The President was emphatic that it was the sole responsibility of the ministry to put the country in the league of industrialised nations.

To achieve this, said the President, the focus should be put on export markets, adding that the country did not have sufficient domestic market to adequately sustain the local manufacturing sector.

The President maintained that he would remain committed to his pre-election pledge of putting up steel industries at Liganga, Songea and Iron ore at Mchuchuma.

’’If we want to succeed we should look for areas to invest and develop,’’ he said.

He petitioned the National Development Co-operation (NDC), to play a leading role in the establishment of new industries.

The President regretted that the country had not adequately utilised the AGOA market to expand the market for Tanzanian commodities.

To establish a stable and guaranteed local market, Kikwete underscored the need to ensure the economy made substantial growth to create a middle class with purchasing power.

’’If we succeed to create a sizeable middle class, we would have succeeded in creating a sufficient local market,’’ he said.

The President was addressing officials from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Markets and those from the Confederation of Trade and Industries.
