Trinidad on alert after bomb attack in capital
Trinidad is still on high alert following Monday’s bombing at a busy shopping district, which left 14 people injured; 2 critically.
Police say they are still continuing the investigation into the explosion, which went off in the capital, Port of Spain at 2.07 in the afternoon.
No group has yet claimed responsibility although police reportedly went to question a man, who was injured in the blast, after receiving a tip-off that he may have planted the device in the bin.
Investigators say they are still trying to determine whether the explosive used, was homemade or a grenade.
There was further panic on Tuesday morning after authorities investigated a letter received by a member of the public warning a bomb was set to go off later on that day in a shopping mall.
Some officers have said they are not treating the incident as a terrorist attack although many considered the explosion a possible copycat incident following the London terrorist bombs on Thursday, 7th July.
Alongside many of the street vendors wounded in the attack, an elderly passer-by and cancer patient, Yvonne McIvor nearly had her leg severed in the blast outside a jewellery store on Frederick Street.
Following emergency surgery, the 66-year old who had just left a cancer centre for radiotherapy treatment, had her left leg amputated from the knee down.
The incident comes in the wake of a series of bombs, which have rocked the globe over the past week. On Tuesday alone, terrorists calculatedly struck in Israel, Iraq and Spain.
Religious Groups
Following the blast in Port of Spain, the Minister of National Security congratulated the defence forces' rapid response and encouraged the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to be alert to any suspicious occurrences.
Martin Joseph said: “I urge all members of the public to exercise utmost vigilance as you go about your business.”
“Citizens can feel confident that this Government would continue to work assiduously in order to ensure the safety and security of all.”
Hours after the explosion, leader of the opposition party, the UNC, speculated those responsible for the explosion could be from a local religious group.
Basdeo Panday, who is also the islands’ former Prime Minister, said the group who helped the ruling party, the PNM, win the elections; was now in dispute with the State over land, wrote Trinidad Guardian.
The bomb has triggered off much fear and shock amongst people, who still vividly recall the attempted coup by a radical Muslim group in 1990, which left 20 people dead and wounded former prime minister, Arthur Robinson.
Members of the Jamaat-al-Musilmeen bombed a police headquarters and then raided the government’s Red House and a national TV station.
