'This is the right thing to do'
Shaq urges others to help out victims of Katrina

MIAMI (AP) -- Sweat dripping from his head as he worked in the midday South Florida sun, Shaquille O'Neal loaded the last item into a cavernous 18-wheel trailer and pointed to the generous stranger.

"Give the man a hug," he urged his children, who quickly obliged. "Tell him thank you."
For the last week, O'Neal and his wife have coordinated efforts to help those in Louisiana and Mississippi whose lives were ripped apart by Hurricane Katrina. And Saturday, O'Neal was on the front line, personally accepting medical items, toiletries, clothes and other items from those inclined to help.

The tractor-trailers hired by the O'Neal family are expected to begin rolling Tuesday toward Baton Rouge, La. -- where O'Neal, the Miami Heat center, attended LSU.

"I commend everybody who's helping out in some way," O'Neal said. "Whether it's monetarily or going to the stores and buying cases of water, bundles of ice ... there's a lot of people chipping in, and my hat goes off to every American and non-American that's helping."

O'Neal spent two days in Louisiana shortly after the storm struck, returning home deeply moved by what he saw. And donating money, he said, simply wouldn't be enough.

So for several days, he and his wife Shaunie have teamed with the El Dorado furniture stores in South Florida and urged people to give whatever was possible. The response, Shaunie O'Neal said, has been overwhelming.

A warehouse commandeered to store the donations is nearly filled to capacity. There's 10,000 gallons of water, piles of diapers, peroxide, personal items and clothing, plus even some donations of refrigerators and beds -- which will be used to help furnish 400 apartments the O'Neal's plan to rent for refugees in Dallas and other areas.

"The refrigerators and beds weren't expected," Shaunie O'Neal said. "But they definitely can be used. They'll definitely come in handy."

The O'Neal's are unclear what will exactly happen once the trucks leave South Florida. They're finding that the process of distributing items throughout the ravaged region is perhaps the most difficult part of the plan.

Shaunie O'Neal said she's been told that the trucks, when they arrive in Louisiana, will be emptied for inspection and the items will be sent to various locations -- depending on what is needed where, and logistics in place for the distribution. She fears it could be a lengthy process.

"It's just frustrating," Shaunie O'Neal said. "All you're trying to do is help and get help to people in need and you see these people on TV just begging for help and whoever, I'm not going to point any fingers, but ... it's very, very, very difficult."

While the 12-time All-Star was manning the dropoff location, Edesio Biffoni, a Swiss man who works in finance and now lives in the Miami suburb of Coconut Grove, came with his sports-utility vehicle loaded with car seats, baby strollers, clothing, toys and other items.

Other citizens -- all unknowing they were about to meet O'Neal -- brought cases of soap and deodorant, plus toothbrushes, toothpaste, baby wipes and numerous other items.

"Everybody should be helping out. ... There's people who need these things more now," Biffoni said, moments after O'Neal gave the man a firm handshake and whispered appreciative words.

O'Neal said the damage he saw during his visit to Louisiana was unimaginable. So he returned home "to devise a plan," he said, and urged his friends and corporations he works with to provide immediate help.

"I'm just doing what I've been taught by my parents to do," O'Neal said. "This is the right thing to do, and I'm trying to urge other people to do it."

LeBron, Kobe, KG in game for Katrina relief
Wade, Stoudemire also playing; more than $1 million will be donated

SportsTicker
Updated: 5:48 p.m. ET Sept. 7, 2005
HOUSTON - All-Stars LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Amare Stoudemire and Dwyane Wade will play in an NBA Players Hurricane Relief Game organized by TNT analyst Kenny Smith.

The game is Sunday at 6 p.m. EDT at the Toyota Center and will be televised by TNT at 11 p.m. Participating players will donate funds and supplies valued at more than $1 million for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

“The game is a show of our support and solidarity for those affected by this natural disaster,” Smith said. “As professional athletes we’ve been very privileged and this is one way we can help take care of our own.”
Before the game, the players will distribute truckloads of their donated goods and supplies to shelters throughout the Houston area, many of which are housing displaced New Orleans residents. Items will include food, clothing, water, toiletries and other basic necessities.

Ticket proceeds will be donated to charity. Special ticket arrangements will be made for Hurricane Katrina victims.

In addition to being home to the NBA’s Rockets, Houston is an offseason hot spot for players looking for competitive offseason workouts. A handful of players in Sunday’s game have ties to Houston or New Orleans.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Damon Jones prepares to throw his shoe into the audience at the end of NBA Players Hurricane Relief game on Sunday in Houston. The game proceeds will benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Smith played with the Rockets, as did Orlando Magic guard Steve Francis and Los Angeles Clippers guard Sam Cassell. Current Rockets entered include guards Mike James and Derek Anderson.

New Orleans Hornets forward J.R. Smith will play. One of the coaches will be Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson, a Louisiana native who went to Southern University.

Also scheduled to play are Detroit Pistons teammates Antonio McDyess and Lindsey Hunter. Both are natives of Mississippi, whose coastline also was hit hard by Katrina.

Others planning to participate are former NBA All-Star forwards Charles Oakley and Derrick Coleman, Indiana Pacers forwards Ron Artest and Jermaine O’Neal, Pistons guard Chauncey Billups, New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury, Boston Celtics swingman Paul Pierce, Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning and Memphis Grizzlies guard Dahntay Jones.

Last year, Artest and O’Neal lost millions of dollars due to suspensions for fighting but are giving back. Mourning, who has undergone a kidney transplant, holds an annual charity game in Miami known as “Zo’s Summer Groove.”

At an NBA Players Association news conference Tuesday announcing a fund-raising initiative called “Operation Rebound,” Marbury broke down and began crying while speaking about the tragedy that has left perhaps thousands dead and tens of thousands homeless.

TNT’s telecast team will include analysts Smith and Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson as host and play-by-play announcer and Craig Sager as sideline reporter.

LeBron loads semis with diapers, food
Cavaliers’ star spends $120,000 in 2 hours to aid Hurricane Katrina relief

Source

NEW YORK - LeBron James helped load four tractor-trailers with diapers, school supplies, food and other items for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ star spent about $120,000 in two hours Thursday at a Sam’s Club warehouse store in Fairlawn, Ohio, near his hometown of Akron. The goods will be sent to Houston, Louisiana and Mississippi.

“He just thought he had to from the heart, decided that this is what he had to do,” James’ mother, Gloria James, said as forklifts behind her moved cases of paper towels, canned tuna and other items onto the trucks. “And here we are.”

James bought “everything from diapers right on down to school supplies,” said the Sam Club’s Christina Knox. “This is a lot of what they need right now.”

The 20-year-old James also plans to join Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett and other top NBA players for a charity game in Houston on Sunday.

In other Katrina developments:

—The NFL has designated the second week of its season as “Hurricane Relief Weekend,” which will culminate with a fund-raising telethon that will be part of ABC’s “Monday Night Football,” commissioner Paul Tagliabue said.

Under the theme of “Recover & Rebuild,” the NFL, its clubs, network television partners — ABC, CBS, ESPN and FOX — and sponsors will use the Sept. 18-19 games to raise funds and bring attention to the massive needs of the Gulf Coast region.

“The Gulf Coast and our entire nation face extraordinary challenges,” Tagliabue said. “We will continue to do our part to contribute to the recovery and rebuilding process. The weekend of what should have been the Saints’ first home game in New Orleans this year is an appropriate time for a special leaguewide effort to focus on the restoration of the Gulf Coast.”

—Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay donated $100,000 and bidders offered another $26,000 for jerseys, helmets and footballs autographed by Peyton Manning as part of a radio auction. Including the donation by Irsay, the Colts said the five-hour auction on WFBQ drew more than 5,000 calls and raised $311,975.

“It was an amazing event,” said Tom Zupancic, the Colts’ senior vice president of business development. “An unbelievable outpouring of generosity from throughout the country enabled us to provide some relief for the people who are suffering.

—The Miami Heat and NBA champion San Antonio Spurs will play Oct. 10 in an extra exhibition game to raise money for Katrina relief. The Heat will donate all proceeds from ticket sales, concessions, parking and retail sales to the American Red Cross.

“We as an organization will do just about anything to supply comfort, compassion, money and anything else we can to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina,” Heat president Pat Riley said.

—Chicago Bulls guard Chris Duhon, whose hometown of Slidell, La., was ravaged by the hurricane, has organized three supply drives in the Chicago area.

Emergency items such as hygiene products, toiletries, bottled water, nonperishable food items, new clothing, new shoes and baby products will be collected. The donations will be transported to Slidell by moving vans and coordinated in conjunction with Slidell Mayor Ben Morris.

—PGA Tour star Vijay Singh and wife Ardena have donated $75,000, with $50,000 going to the American Red Cross and $25,000 to the United Way of New Orleans.

—The Mississippi State-Tulane football game Sept. 17 will be played in Shreveport, La., Mississippi State officials said Thursday. The game was originally scheduled to be played at the Superdome in New Orleans. Mississippi State said it will forgo its $200,000 guarantee to help Tulane’s athletic department in its attempt to overcome the budget shortfall resulting from the relocation of its athletic programs.

—Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz and the Los Angeles Angels’ Vladimir Guerrero will donate $50,000 each. The Dominicans hope other major leaguers will join them.

“The United States has provided my family and me with more than we could have ever dreamed,” Ortiz said. “I’ll never forget the way Red Sox fans and the team’s owners helped my country after the floods last year.”

Red Sox fans have given nearly $185,000 to the Red Cross in six days.

Hurricane victims provided with some Magic
Ex-NBA star promises jobs, clothing and entertainment at shelter

Source

LOS ANGELES - Magic Johnson promised jobs to some Hurricane Katrina victims living at a shelter in Los Angeles, in addition to helping provide them with shoes, food and entertainment.

The former Los Angeles Lakers superstar runs his own corporation, which includes local TGIFriday’s and Burger King restaurants, 24 Hour Fitness centers and Starbucks.

Johnson told more than 300 families staying at the Dream Center in Echo Park near downtown that he would find jobs for some of them.

“We want to make sure that you understand that somebody loves you and cares about you,” he said Thursday. “It may be tough. It may be a little dim and bleak, but you know what? It’s going to be all right.”

Johnson signed autographs and met with hurricane victims at the center, where more than 60 people were expected to arrive Thursday night, Pastor Matthew Barnett said.

“I’ve greeted the families and hugged them and high-fived them,” Johnson told Fox 11 News. “They’re so happy to see myself, but I’m happy to see them.”

The promise of jobs was good news for David Mince, a marine electrician who lost his home in the hurricane.

“We weren’t people who were bums on the street. We’re people who had productive lives,” he said. “We were living the American dream and suddenly our lives were turned upside down.”

Officials expect everyone at the center to have a job in 30 days, Barnett said.

“We’re going to train them first and then place them in jobs,” Johnson told the TV news station.

Hurricane victims in Louisiana, Texas and at the Dream Center will receive 5,000 pairs of shoes from Johnson’s line, and another company has pledged to donate 2,000 pairs of flip-flops.

Johnson said his self-named foundation had partnered with a drug store and grocery store to fill prescriptions and provide groceries for evacuees for free.

Johnson said he expected the government to pay for temporary housing for all displaced families.

“What the government should be doing and can be doing is assisting the people who are here and in San Antonio and in all the other cities and making sure they get funding,” he said.

Jay-Z backs Kanye West’s telethon outburst
‘This is America,’ says the rapper defending his friend

By Gail Mitchell
Billboard
Updated: 10:40 p.m. ET Sept. 7, 2005

LOS ANGELES - Rap mogul Jay-Z is standing behind Kanye West, who went off-script to declare that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” during his appearance in last Friday’s NBC telethon for Hurricane Katrina victims.

“I’m backing Kanye 100 percent,” Jay-Z told Billboard by phone from London. “This is America. You should be able to say what you want to say. We have freedom of speech.”

Jay-Z is also West’s boss in his capacity as president/CEO of Def Jam Recordings. West’s new album, “Late Registration,” opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Wednesday.

During his Friday appearance, West added that America was set up “to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible.”

Jay-Z said he shared some of West’s views. “It’s really numbing,” he said. “You can’t believe it’s happening in America. You wonder, what’s going on? Why were people so slow to react? I don’t understand it.”

Although Jay-Z said he hasn’t “spoken to anyone about doing a concert event” to benefit Katrina victims, he says he wants to speak with Sean “Diddy” Combs about starting a fund exclusively to help blacks in times of crisis. “Just in case anything like this happens in the future, we can do what the elder Bush and (former President Bill) Clinton are doing for our people specifically.”

Morgan Freeman plans Katrina relief auction
Actor, who lives in Mississippi delta, will help raise funds on Web site

NEW YORK - Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman has helped organize an online auction to raise funds for disaster relief in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The auction, which also includes corporate-donated items, will open Friday on the Charity Folks Web site, an online auction venue, and run until Sept. 16, it was announced Wednesday.

Items include the opportunity to attend a screening of Freeman’s upcoming film, “An Unfinished Life,” a resort getaway and memorabilia packages from various movies.

Proceeds will go to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

“It’s sort of well-known that anytime any catastrophe happens anywhere in the world, they can count on the United States for help,” Freeman told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

“Now, charity begins at home, so we call on anybody who has even the thought (of giving) to get beyond the thought and help these people,” the 68-year-old actor said.

Freeman, who lives in the Mississippi Delta, said his property missed the brunt of the hurricane, getting just rain and high winds.

The actor last year helped establish the Grenada Relief Fund in response to the devastation wrecked on the Caribbean island by Hurricanes Ivan and Emily.

Freeman won an Oscar for his role in “Million Dollar Baby.” His screen credits also include “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Driving Miss Daisy” and “Street Smart.”

The Red Cross said Wednesday it has raised $21 million, with nearly $15 million coming from individual donations through the Red Cross’ Web site.

Citation:
America is the most powerful country in the world, but it takes us four days to get to hurricane victims? The things that took the government four days to do are the same things they could've been done as soon as the hurricane hit. They could have flown helicopters in there or something. America is the most powerful country and the proudest country when it feels like it. They said they couldn't get down there for different reasons, but those were just excuses. I sent a tour bus full of water and supplies to Mississippi. My bus driver paid with his own MasterCard. I told him to go ahead and buy whatever they needed and I'd pay him back. He filled the tour bus up twice with water, food, and supplies before the American government did. He drove down there from Memphis. If I can dispatch help from my troops while out of town, then why couldn't Bush?! Following that I immediately came down there myself and I sat and signed autographs and passed out water to the kids for four, five hours myself. How can David Banner, a so-called "gangsta rapper," react quicker to a crisis than our own government?
(...)The bigger picture is that we're gonna have to take care of our own people.
I'm glad Kanye said what he said on NBC. The President never gave a damn about black folks. I mean, we knew that already. That's not a surprise. It was the perfect time for him to say it. Personally, I believe that if CNN had showed more white people stuck in New Orleans, the government would've reacted quicker.

I blame Bush for the time it took for them to react to the situation. I blame Bush for not taking this situation as seriously as they did after 9/11 . This is ten times worse than 9/11. These are communities; whole cities of people, just gone. We're talking about cities, not just a building. We're talking about a whole coast of people. These are the same states that helped assure that Bush was going to get in office, and then he turned his back on them. Where was he when we needed him? This is our President!

In the Art of War they tell you that the best way to control the people is through chaos. Most people make their decisions when something happens that sways them emotionally. So maybe this is God's blessing.

Jeff a écrit:
en m tps...c'est aussi du biz et de la stratégie de com....Se mobiliser et lacher des millions ...ok ...mais quand on pese 100 million de dollars...ça fait moins mal...

Ouais lacher 1 million quand tu peses 100 millions ça va. Cela étant, les gens qui gagnent 2000 euros par mois ne lachent pas forcement 20 euros pour aider. Donc ne minimise pas leur action des vedettes black des US.

Ludacris aussi Wink

***********************************************************

Grammy-award winning hip-hop artist Ludacris welcomed 15 families from the Gulf Coast region into their new, rent-free homes in Atlanta Friday.

The Ludacris Foundation and the Ebony Son Entertainment team chipped in $100,000 to provide apartments to the families, many of whom lost everything in New Orleans.

"Our initiative is one that people can see their donations at work – something very visible and tangible. My goal is to raise $500,000 to assist many more families in this effort," Ludacris said in a statement.

The families can live in the apartments located off I-285 at Cascade Road rent-free for four months. Volunteers filled the homes with a refrigerator full of food, clothing, furniture and bedding.

"These victims have immediate life-threatening and long-term needs that greatly impact their basic survival. This should be a time of reflection for all of us to appreciate what we have and what we have to give to others in need of our help," said Roberta Shields, President of The Ludacris Foundation.

"When you look at them, you pretty much look at yourself, like this can be me and then when the smiles come on and the hugs, you feel real good. It gives you a really good feeling a warm feeling," said volunteer Debra Anty.

Donations can be sent to: The Ludacris Foundation PO Box 768511, Roswell, GA 30076 payable to the Ludacris Foundation (please note Hurricane Katrina on your method of payment) or via PayPal.
