Mbeki stays put as I Coast mediator

President Thabo Mbeki has not been asked to step down from his
role as peace mediator in the Ivory Coast peace talks, the
Presidency said on Tuesday night.
"There is no truth to the reports in some newspapers, apparently
sourced from French news agencies, that the African Union and
United Nations Security Council have decided to ask President Mbeki
to step down from the peace mediation in Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory
Coast)," spokesperson Murphy Morobe said in a statement.
He said sections of the French media were victims of a
"misinformation campaign" conducted by forces bent on preventing
peace in the region.
"The South African government is nevertheless mindful of the
fact that there are significant interests at stake and that there
would be elements who feel threatened by peace breaking out in the
region, especially a peace brokered by-and-large by Africans
themselves."
